Rounds & Repertoire








PRELIMINARY SELECTION

Applicants must EITHER submit a Video Recording OR Participate in one of the Live Pre-selection Auditions around the World.


VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Applicants must submit a performance recording of repertoire of the candidate’s choice. Each work on the video must be continuous and unedited performance. Recordings may be paused between each repertoire selection or recorded on the different venues/dates.
If an applicant is selected to participate in the competition, repertoire performed in performance video of the preliminary round can be repeated in the semi final round or final round. The recording can be submitted as a single DVD, sent by mail with a completed application form, or uploaded through the Gershwin Music Competition online application link. Links to online recordings (Youtube) can be also be emailed to globe333@hotmail.com
Recordings must be received by the deadline: October 15, 2017 - Postmarked.

Time of recording

Category 18 to 40 years of age: no less than 15 minutes and no more than 40 minutes of total listening time.
Category 13 to 17 years of age: no less than 10 minutes and no more than 30 minutes of total listening time.
Category 7 to 12 years of age: no less than 5 minutes and no more than 20 minutes of total listening time.

LIVE PRE-SELECTION AUDITIONS

The dates & locations for the Pre-selection Live Auditions are as follows:

June 8 - 15, 2016: Tbilisi.V.Sarajishvili State Conservatory, Tbilisi, Georgia - Complete.
July 22 - 23, 2017: Alion Baltic International Music Festival. Georg Ots Music Academy, Tallinn, Estonia.
October 1, 2017: Steinway Gallery, Melville (Long Island), United States of America.

Time requirements for Live Auditions

Category 18 to 40 years of age: no more than 20 minutes of performance time.
Category 13 to 17 years of age: no more than 15 minutes of performance time.
Category 7 to 12 years of age: no more than 10 minutes of performance time.
Important! It's not required to perform Gershwin works at Live Preliminary Audition or Preliminary Round Recording


COMPETITION ROUNDS


PIANO

Artists Category (Ages 18 to 40)

SEMIFINAL ROUND (40 competitors)

Each pianist will perform a short recital program not to exceed 20 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the pianist and must include one or more works by George Gershwin. Gershwin work(s) can be composer's original composition, or it can be a transcription on a composition by George Gershwin. One work only chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.

FINAL ROUND (12 competitors)

Each pianist will perform a recital program between 25 and 40 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the pianist. The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Works from the previous rounds may be repeated.

Young Artists Category (Ages 13 to 17)

SEMIFINAL ROUND

Each pianist will perform a short recital program between 15 and 20 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the pianist and must include one or more works by George Gershwin. Gershwin work(s) can be composer's original composition, or it can be a transcription on a composition by George Gershwin. Two works chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.

FINAL ROUND

Each pianist will perform a recital program between 20 and 25 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the pianist. The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Works from the previous rounds may be repeated.

Talent Show Category (Ages 8 to 12)

1 Round only

Each pianist will perform a program between 10 and 15 minutes in length. The repertoire will consist of works chosen by the pianist and must include one work by George Gershwin.

Each contestant will perform a recital program between 25 and 35 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the candidate. The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Works from the previous rounds may be repeated.

Young Artists Category (Ages 13 to 17)

Each contestant will perform a short recital program between 15 and 20 minutes in length. Talent Show Category (Ages 8 to 12)

1 Round only

Each contestant will perform a program between 10 and 15 minutes in length. The repertoire will consist of works chosen by the candidate and must include one work by George Gershwin or a transcription of music by George Gershwin.

Artists Category (Ages 18 to 40)

Gershwin work(s) can be composer's original composition, or it can be a transcription on a composition by George Gershwin. One work only chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.

Each contestant will perform a recital program between 20 and 25 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the candidate. The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Works from the previous rounds may be repeated.

Young Artists Category (Ages 13 to 17)

The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the candidate and must includea transription of a work by George Gershwin. Two works chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.

FINAL ROUND

Each contestant will perform a recital program between 15 and 20 minutes in length. The repertoire for this recital will consist of works chosen by the contestant. The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Works from the previous rounds may be repeated.


VOICE

Artists Category (Ages 18 to 40)

SEMIFINAL ROUND (30 competitors)

Each vocalist will perform a short recital program between 15 and 20 minutes in length. The program must include:

  • An aria or a song by George Gershwin.
  • 1 classical aria/an Art Song/or an author song (e.g. singer-composer)
  • The remainder of the program will be chosen by the vocalist.

1 aria chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.


FINAL ROUND (10 competitors)

Each contestant will perform a recital program between 25 and 30 minutes in length. The program must include:

  • An aria or a song by George Gershwin.
  • 2 classical arias/Art Songs/or Author songs. Contestants may repeat classical aria/an Art Song/or an author song performed in the Semifinal Round.
  • The remainder of the program will be chosen by the vocalist.

The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Gershwin's Aria performed at the Semifinal Round may be repeated in the Final Round.

Young Artists Category (Ages 17 and younger)

SEMIFINAL ROUND

Each contestant will perform a short recital program between 10 and 15 minutes in length. The program must include:

  • An aria or a song by George Gershwin.
  • 1 classical aria/an Art Song/or an author song (e.g. singer-composer)
  • The remainder of the program will be chosen by the vocalist.

Arias chosen from the repertoire of the Preliminary Round may be repeated in the Semifinal Round.

FINAL ROUND

Each contestant will perform a recital program between 15 and 20 minutes in length. The program must include:

  • An aria or a song by George Gershwin.
  • 1 classical aria/an Art Song/or an author song (e.g. singer-composer), which can be the same selection, performed in the Semifinal Round.
  • The remainder of the program will be chosen by the vocalist.

The program should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to present a stylistically diverse program. Gershwin's Aria performed at the Semifinal Round may be repeated in the Final Round.
