Masterclasses 2017

The Third G.Gershwin International Music Competition 2017 focuses on education and development, providing master class opportunities for highly talented college, graduate and emerging professional musicians. Master classes with Gershwin International Competition Jury Members are designed to provide a productive and enriching professional experience to all who participate.
Master classes are held during competition week, but operate independently from the competition itself. Competition participants and audience members are encouraged to observe the competition rounds in between master class sessions.

Eligibility

The George Gershwin Competition Masterclasses 2017 are open to the following individuals:

  • Competition Participants who do not pass to the Final Round
  • Masterclass applicants, who do NOT participate in the competition

Location

The George Gershwin Competition Masterclasses 2017 will be held October 31 - November 2, 2017 at The National Opera America Center.


PIANO MASTER CLASS with Prof. Michael Bulychev-Okser (United States)

TUESDAY, October 31, 2017 — 6:00PM TO 7:30PM

Three pianists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by Prof. Michael Bulychev-Okser,
Founder/Artistic Director of G.Gershwin International Music Competition.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public piano lessons, which focus on solo repertoire.

VOICE MASTER CLASS with the Metropolitan Opera Soprano, Olga Makarina

TUESDAY, October 31, 2017 — 7:30PM TO 9:00PM

Three vocalists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by Metropolitan Opera Soprano, Olga Makarina.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public vocal lessons, which focus on bel canto operatic repertoire.

VOICE MASTER CLASS with the President of the Talents of the World, David Gvinianidze (Russia/United States)

FRIDAY, November 3, 2017 — 11:00AM TO 12:30PM

Three vocalists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by President of the Talents of the World, David Gvinianidze.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public vocal lessons, which focus on vocal technique and career opportunities.

VIOLIN MASTER CLASS with IVRY GITLIS (Israel/France)

THURSDAY, November 2, 2017 — 12:30PM TO 3:30PM

Three violinists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by Prof. Sumiko Tajihi.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public violin lessons, which focus on solo violin repertoire.

Three pianists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by Dorian Leljak.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public piano lessons, which focus on piano solo repertoire.

FLUTE MASTER CLASS Prof. Patrick Dillery (United States)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2017 — 4:30PM TO 6:00PM

Three flutists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by the world renowned flutist, Patrick Dillery.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public flute lessons, which focus on flute sound quality and technique

PIANO MASTER CLASS with the legendary pianist, Prof. Daniel Pollack (United States)

TUESDAY, October 31, 2017 — 6:30PM TO 8:30PM

Three pianists are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by Prof. Daniel Pollack.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public piano lessons, which focus on piano solo repertoire, including the secrets of the old Russian piano school.

BRASS instruments MASTER CLASS with Rafael (SWAP) Ramiro (Philippines/Canada)
"The human Orchestra"

WEDNESDAY, November 1, 2017 — 2:00PM TO 3:30PM

Three brass instrument performers are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by the world-renowned band leader, Rafael Ramiro.
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public lessons, which focus on brass solo repertoire.

CHAMBER ENSEMBLES MASTER CLASS with Gerardo Estrada Martínez (Venezuela/Belarus)

WEDNESDAY, November 1, 2017 — 7:30PM TO 9:00PM

Three chamber ensembles are chosen from the field of candidates to participate in this Masterclass, taught by the Golden baton of South America, Maestro Gerardo Estrada Martínez
Candidates who have been pre-selected will perform, and students, music educators and general public audiences are welcome to observe these public chamber music presentation, which will focus on chamber music repertoire.

Repertoire

Applicants shall select and prepare a solo program, not less than 15 minutes in duration, for performance in the master class.
Sections of multi-movement works, such as a piano sonata, or a collection of short pieces of contrasting style, are allowed.
The instructor will choose pieces from your program to focus on during the master class.
Chamber ensembles may choose various short selections to perform for Maestro Gerardo Estrada Martínez.
